Sun Safety Tips For Children In The UK

Protecting your little rays: Sun safety tips for children in the UK.

With its bursts of glorious sunshine, the UK may not be renowned for its scorching summers. However, even in the UK, the sun can pose risks to the delicate skin of children. As parents and caregivers, it is our responsibility to ensure that our little ones enjoy the outdoors safely. In this blog post, we will explore essential safety tips specifically tailored to children living in the UK.

  1. Slather on the Suncream! We’ve all heard it before, but it bears repeating: Sun cream is your best friend when it comes to shielding your children from harmful UV rays. Opt for a broad-spectrum suncream (protection against UVA & UVB) with an SPF of 30 or higher, and make sure to apply it generously and evenly on all exposed areas of skin. Don’t forget those often neglected spots like the ears, back of neck, and tops of the feet. Remember to re-apply every 2 hours or more frequently if they’ve been swimming or sweating.

  2. Cool, covering clothing. When the temperature rises, it’s tempting to dress our little ones in as little clothing as possible. However, lightweight and breathable long-sleeved shirts and trousers made of tightly woven fabric can be a lifesaver.

Look for clothing with UPF (ultraviolet protection factor) labels for added peace of mind. It’s a win-win situation: they'll stay cool and protected all at once!

  3. Seek shade, stay cool. The sun is strongest in the UK between 11am and 4pm, so try to plan outdoor activities before or after these peak hours. If you can’t avoid being out during this time, seek shade wherever possible. Set up a cool and comfortable spot under a tree, use a sun umbrella, or even create some shade with a pop up tent. Encourage your little adventurers to take regular breaks in the shade to rest, hydrate and recharge.

  4. Hats and Sunglasses. Accessorize in style! Get your kids excited about wearing hats and sunglasses by choosing fun, colourful options that they’ll love. Wide-brimmed hats provide extra protection for the face, neck and ears, while sunglasses with UV-blocking lenses shield those precious peepers from harmful rays. Plus, they’ll feel like mini fashionistas or rockstars!

  5. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! Sun safety goes hand in hand with staying hydrated. Make sure your kids have plenty of water throughout the day, even if they don’t feel thirsty. Opt for water over sugary drinks to keep them properly hydrated. It’s a simple yet crucial step in preventing heat-related illnesses and ensuring their bodies can handle the summer heat.

  6. Set an example. As parents, we have a huge influence on our children’s behaviour. Show them the importance of sun safety by practicing it yourself. Be their role model by applying suncream, wearing a hat, and taking breaks in the shade. Encourage healthy habits from an early age, and they’ll be more likely to continue practicing sun safety as they grow.

Remember, sun safety isn't just a one-day thing. It's a habit that should be practiced even on cloudy days. UV rays can still penetrate through clouds and cause harm, so don't let those grey skies fool you. By taking these simple steps and making sun safety a priority, you'll ensure that your little ones can enjoy the outdoors safely, without compromising on fun and adventure.

So, let's embrace the British sunshine and ensure our children’s sun-kissed adventures are worry-free. Cheers to a fun-filled, sun-safe summer for our little ones across the UK!
