Top tips for travelling with kids

Traveling with children can be a time for making some of the best memories as a family. It can also seem like absolute hell at times. I have had some lovely holidays with my little ones but my gosh, I have also had some very unenjoyable moments!

While it may seem challenging at times, with a little planning and preparation, you can make the journey smoother and create unforgettable memories together. In this blog post, we'll explore some practical tips and tricks to make traveling with children easier and more enjoyable.

  1. Plan Ahead: Start your journey by planning in advance. Research your destination and consider the activities that will interest your children. Look for family-friendly accommodations, attractions, and restaurants that cater to kids. Make a list of must-visit places and create a loose itinerary to keep everyone on track without feeling overwhelmed.

  2. Pack Smart: When it comes to packing, less is often more. Make a checklist of essential items and clothing for your children. Pack versatile clothing that can be layered, as weather conditions can change. Don't forget to include some comfort items like their favourite toy or blanket to help them feel secure during the trip. Consider using packing cubes to organise clothes and avoid chaos in your suitcase.

  3. Keep the Essentials Handy: Ensure you have easy access to essentials during the journey. Carry a well-stocked nappy bag or backpack with snacks, wipes, nappies, extra clothes, and any medication your child may need. A first aid kit and sunscreen are also must-haves. Having these items readily available will save you from potential emergencies or unexpected rummaging through suitcases.

  4. Engage in Pre-trip Discussions: Involve your children in the trip planning process. Discuss the upcoming adventure, show them pictures, and read books about the destination. Encourage their curiosity and answer any questions they may have. This involvement will build anticipation and make them feel more excited about the journey.

  5. Entertainment on the Go: Children can get bored during long journeys, so keeping them entertained is crucial. Bring along colouring books, puzzles, or small toys that can capture their attention. Portable travel games or books are also fun! If your kids use an i-pad for long journeys, remember to download their favourite apps or cartoons. And don't forget to pack headphones to keep the noise level down for fellow passengers.

  6. Snacks and Hydration: Pack a variety of healthy snacks like granola bars, fruit, and crackers. Avoid sugary snacks that may lead to energy spikes and crashes. Additionally, keep your children hydrated by carrying water bottles or sippy cups. Encourage them to drink regularly, especially during flights, to combat the effects of dry cabin air and trapped wind.

  7. Embrace Flexibility: Remember, traveling with children often requires flexibility. Things may not go exactly as planned, and that's okay. Be open to unexpected detours or changes in your schedule. Allow for downtime and breaks so that everyone can recharge. Embracing flexibility will reduce stress and help you adapt to unforeseen circumstances.

  8. Make It Educational: Traveling offers a unique opportunity for children to learn about different cultures, history, and geography. Visit local museums, landmarks, and historical sites to make the trip educational and enriching. Encourage your children to interact with locals, try new foods, and explore their surroundings. This will foster a sense of curiosity and expand their horizons.

So, pack your bags, buckle up, and get ready for an unforgettable family adventure!
